Organizaciones campesinas piden que se revise el TLCAN
Una docena de organizaciones campesinas exigieron al presidente electo, Felipe Calderón Hinojosa, impulsar la revisión del Tratado de Libre Comercio con Estados Unidos y Canadá (TLCAN), porque aseguran que al abrir la frontera a las importaciones de productos básicos, como el maíz, el agro mexicano sufrirá un retroceso que pondrá en peligro la seguridad alimentaria.
Las organizaciones campesinas señalaron que el nuevo gobierno deberá tomar acciones urgentes para tratar de renegociar el capítulo agropecuario del TLCAN, especialmente excluir el maíz y el frijol, alimentos fundamentales para la soberanía alimentaria nacional. Las dirigencias del Congreso Agrario Permanente, del Consejo Nacional Agropecuario, de la Confederación Nacional Campesina y de la Central Campesina Cardenista, entre otras, consideraron que el gobierno de Calderón Hinojosa debe tomar acciones prioritarias, principalmente por la magnitud de las diferencias que separan las realidades del agro de Canadá, Estados Unidos y México. Además propusieron un incremento de ciento por ciento en el presupuesto rural del próximo año para la recuperación de la soberanía alimentaria y la superación de la pobreza rural. La Jornada.

SANTA ANA, Calif. - State investigators have linked a Republican campaign to letters sent to thousands of Orange County Hispanics warning them they could go to jail or be deported if they vote next month, a spokesman for the attorney general said.
"We have identified where we believe the mailing list was obtained," said Nathan Barankin, spokesman for Attorney General Bill Lockyer.
He declined to identify the specific campaign, citing the ongoing investigation. The Los Angeles Times and The Orange County Register both reported Thursday that the investigation appeared to be focused on the campaign of Tan D. Nguyen, a Republican who immigrated to the U.S. from Vietnam as a child and is now challenging Democratic U.S. Rep. Loretta Sanchez. Nguyen's Web site says he opposes illegal immigration.
The letter, written in Spanish, tells recipients: "You are advised that if your residence in this country is illegal or you are an immigrant, voting in a federal election is a crime that could result in jail time."
In fact, immigrants who are naturalized U.S. citizens can legally vote.
It is illegal to threaten or intimidate voters, though, and the complaints about the letters that began surfacing this week prompted state and federal investigations.
Barankin said investigators had been questioning people in Orange County.
The two newspapers reported state investigators had found the location where the letters were printed and mailed to an estimated 14,000 Democratic voters in central Orange County. The Los Angeles Times, citing an unnamed source, said authorities had interviewed Nguyen at his office.
Nguyen did not return messages left by The Associated Press or either newspaper.
Sanchez said in an interview Thursday on Univision that the sender should be punished for stating that immigrants can't vote. It would be unfortunate if the person responsible was another immigrant, she said.
"What a shame, really, that this is still happening in the United States today," Sanchez said.
Sanchez said she had never spoken to Nguyen because her campaign didn't see him as a threat to her re-election.
The owner of Huntington Beach-based Mailing Pros, Christopher West, told The Orange County Register that he was hired to do the mailings but didn't know what they said and didn't know any laws were being broken when the mailer was sent. He said he gave investigators the name of the person who hired him.
"I'm the one that processed it, and I don't read Spanish," West said. "Until the investigator read it to me, I didn't know the content."
Scott Baugh, chairman of the Orange County Republican Party, condemned the letter as "an obnoxious, grotesque piece of work."
"Regardless of who did it — Republican or Democrat — if it's a crime, then whoever did it should be prosecuted," Baugh said.
A group of six Vietnamese-American political candidates running for offices in Orange County issued a joint statement saying: "The content of this mailer is offensive to the immigrant voters, regardless of their ethnicity."
The note's letterhead resembles that of an anti-illegal immigration group, California Coalition for Immigration Reform, but group leader Barbara Coe said she told investigators for the attorney general's office Wednesday that her group didn't authorize the letter and she didn't know who sent it.
"The letterhead was altered and I've never head of any Sergio Ramirez," the name signed to the letter, Coe said.
Numerous political leaders including Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger have denounced the letter and called for the investigations.

National Security Council spokesman Frederick Jones said in written comments that an update was needed to "reflect the fact that space has become an even more important component of U.S. economic, national and homeland security." The military has become increasingly dependent on satellite communication and navigation, as have providers of cellphones, personal navigation devices and even ATMs.
The administration said the policy revisions are not a prelude to introducing weapons systems into Earth orbit. "This policy is not about developing or deploying weapons in space. Period," said a senior administration official who was not authorized to speak on the record.
Nevertheless, Michael Krepon, co-founder of the Henry L. Stimson Center, a nonpartisan think tank that follows the space-weaponry issue, said the policy changes will reinforce international suspicions that the United States may seek to develop, test and deploy space weapons. The concerns are amplified, he said, by the administration's refusal to enter negotiations or even less formal discussions on the subject.
"The Clinton policy opened the door to developing space weapons, but that administration never did anything about it," Krepon said. "The Bush policy now goes further."
Theresa Hitchens, director of the nonpartisan Center for Defense Information in Washington, said that the new policy "kicks the door a little more open to a space-war fighting strategy" and has a "very unilateral tone to it."

The U.S. position flows in part from the fact that so many key weapons systems are now dependent on information and communications from orbiting satellites, analysts said. The U.S. military has developed and deployed far more space-based technology than any other nation, giving it great strategic advantages. But with the superior technology has come a perceived vulnerability to attacks on essential satellites.

Stephen Hawking actuara en una pelicula que tratara sobre sus Teorias del Universo.
London- British physicist Stephen Hawking hopes to soon bring his theories on the origin of the universe to the silver screen, the Sunday Times reported. Hawking is to play himself in the film Beyond the Horizon, in which he explains his hypotheses on the Big Bang theory of creation and on black holes, the Times said.
Hawking has the lead role in the film in which he, as narrator, explains cosmological concepts, the report said.
The scientist is currently working on the script, which revolves around his theories, with physicist and former Star Trek scriptwriter Leonard Mlodinow.
No date for the beginning of filming has been given.

El líder de la banda, Farrokh Bulsara, conocido como Freddie Mercury, nació el 5 de septiembre de 1946. Queen es una banda de rock británica formada por Freddie Mercury, Brian May y Roger Taylor en 1970 de los restos de Smile, con John Deacon uniéndose al año siguiente completando la formación histórica. Después de ciertas discusiones donde Taylor propuso de "The Rich Kids" se impuso la opción de Freddie Mercury: Queen. Este nombre no dejaba de ser controversial pues hacía alusión a diversos elementos: reina es el nombre de una jefa de estado monárquico, también la líder de un panal de abejas. Sin embargo queen es además la forma despectiva con que se designa a un integrante del movimiento gay y no hubo gente que no lo asociara con queer, que posee un significado similar. Con las polémicas al margen, la banda debutó con el nombre Queen el 25 de noviembre de 1970. Pero aún no encontraban bajista. El cuarto fue el elegido: John Richard Deacon.

El Departamento de Defensa de EEUU resporto que durante los meses de Mayo a Agosto del presente año murieron 117 Irakies por dia.
El equipo de medicos de Johns Hopkins elaboraron su estudio mediante un metodo estadistico denominado "muestreo de agrupamiento" (cluster sampling). El equipo escogio de manera aleatoria grupos de 47 casas por un total de 1,849 distribuidas por todo Irak. Se entrevistaron a todos los habiantes de las viviendas sobre cualquier muerte familiar durante los 40 meses desde de la invasion, al igual que en el año previo a la invasion. El grupo señala que reviso certificados de defunsion para el 92% de las muertes reportadas. En base a estos resultados, se tabulo el grado de mortalidad nacional para varios periodos antes y despues del inicio de la guerra. El nivel de mortandad el año pasado fue 4 veces mayor al nivel antes de la invasion. La poblacion de Irak es de aproximadamente 24 millones de habitantes. Los grupos de derechos humanos han estimado que durante la dictadura de Saddam Hussein murieron de 250,000 a 290,000 individuos en un periodo de 20 años.

Skip Spence of Moby Grape (formerly of Jefferson Airplane) introduced them to one another in 1969, after Hartman arrived in California determined to meet Spence and join his band. Johnston and Hartman called their fledgling group Pud and experimented with different lineups and styles as they performed in and around San Jose, California. They were briefly a power trio, and briefly worked with a horn section. In 1970, they teamed up with bass player Dave Shogren and singer, guitarist and songwriter Pat Simmons. Simmons, who had belonged to several area bands and also performed as a solo artist, was already an accomplished fingerstyle player whose approach to the instrument complemented Johnston's rhythmic R&B strumming.
In a recent interview, Tom Johnston attributed the band's eventual name to friend and housemate Keith "Dyno" Rosen, who considered it an improvement over Pud.

Censura Kumate tasas de mortalidad infantil por maltrato en México
México, DF. Al recibir la presea Belisario Domínguez, el doctor Jesús Kumate denunció este martes la tardía atención que en el país se le ha dado a la salud en la niñez.
Durante su discurso, ofrecido dentro de las instalaciones del Senado de la República, el ex secretario de Salud galardonado con la citada distinción, también criticó que en México se invierta más en los rescates carreteros o cañeros: esto, dijo, le cuesta más al país que invertir en salud para evitar la muerte de seis mil infantes al año, informó Formato 21.
Asimismo, en sesión solemne de ese órgano legislativo, el doctor Kumate Rodríguez abordó los índices de muerte infantil provocada por maltrato. Dijo que por cada fallecimiento por accidente hay 100 supervivientes con secuelas por las lesiones.
Agregó que son preocupantes las cifras de maltrato en la población mexicana menor a 15 años dado su progresivo aumento. En este sentido señaló que las agresiones representan el lugar 29 en las causas de muerte en la población en general, pero para edad prescolar ocupar el lugar número 10 y el 6 en edad escolar.
También comentó que en México, la tasa de mortalidad por maltrato es 30 veces mayor a la que se da en países como Suecia.

At Columbia, Students Attack Minuteman Founder

Students stormed the stage at Columbia University's Roone auditorium yesterday, knocking over chairs and tables and attacking Jim Gilchrist, the founder of the Minutemen, a group that patrols the border between America and Mexico.
Mr. Gilchrist and Marvin Stewart, another member of his group, were in the process of giving a speech at the invitation of the Columbia College Republicans. They were escorted off the stage unharmed and exited the auditorium by a back door.
Having wreaked havoc onstage, the students unrolled a banner that read, in both Arabic and English, "No one is ever illegal." As security guards closed the curtains and began escorting people from the auditorium, the students jumped from the stage, pumping their fists, chanting victoriously, "Si se pudo, si se pudo," Spanish for "Yes we could!"
The Minuteman Project, an organization of volunteers founded in 2004 by Mr. Gilchrist, aims to keep illegal immigrants out of America by alerting law enforcement officials when they attempt to cross the border. The group uses fiery language and unorthodox tactics to advance its platform. "Future generations will inherit a tangle of rancorous, unassimilated, squabbling cultures with no common bond to hold them together, and a certain guarantee of the death of this nation as a harmonious ‘melting pot,'" the group's Web site warns.
The pandemonium that ensued as the evening's keynote speaker took the stage was merely the climax of protest that brewed all week. A number of campus groups, including the Chicano caucus, the African-American student organization, and the International Socialist organization, began planning their protests early this week when they heard that the Minutemen would be arriving on campus.
The student protesters, who attended the event clad in white as a sign of dissent, booed and shouted the speakers down throughout. They interrupted Mr. Stewart, who is African-American, when he referred to the Declaration of Independence's self-evident truth that "All men are created equal," calling him a racist, a sellout, and a black white supremacist.
A student's demand that Mr. Stewart speak in Spanish elicited thundering applause and brought the protesters to their feet. The protesters remained standing, turned their backs on Mr. Stewart for the remainder of his remarks, and drowned him out by chanting, "Wrap it up, wrap it up!" Mr. Stewart appeared unfazed by their behavior. He simply smiled and bellowed, "No wonder you don't know what you're talking about."
"These are racist individuals heading a project that terrorizes immigrants on the U.S.-Mexican border," Ryan Fukumori, a Columbia junior who took part in the protest, told The New York Sun. "They have no right to be able to speak here."
The student protesters "rush to vindicate themselves with monikers like ‘liberal' and ‘open-minded,' but their actions, their attempt to condemn the Minutemen without even hearing what they have to say, speak otherwise," the president of the Columbia College Republicans, Chris Kulawik, said. On campus, the Republicans' flyers advertising the event were defaced and torn down.
The College Republicans expressed their concern about the lack of free speech for opposing viewpoints on the Columbia campus in the wake of the evening's events. "We've often feared that there's not freedom of speech at Columbia for more right-wing views — and that was proven tonight," the executive director of the Columbia College Republicans, Lauren Steinberg, said.
The Minutemen's arrival at Columbia drew protesters from around the city as well. An hour before Messrs. Stewart and Mr. Gilchrist took the stage, rowdy protests began outside the auditorium on Broadway, where activists chanted, "Hey, hey, ho, ho, the Minutemen have got to go!"

Fox Apoyando La Liberación de Cultivos Transgénicos
Ejemplo: Si hablamos de maíz transgénico, estamos hablando de una planta que ha sido modificada geneticamente para resistir temporadas de sequia, quiza plagas u otros factores que dificulten el cultivo. Excelente! hasta aqui, solo que estas plantas tienen patente y solo las compañias pueden utilizarlas o autorizar su cultivo (vender una licencia) a un campesino. Aqui viene el problema, si un campesino cultiva el maíz común, y a escasos kilometros otro cultiva un maíz transgénico y hay una polinización cruzada (lo cual ya se ha dado en otros países), entonces el que tiene el cultivo del maíz común contaminado con el maíz transgénico de su vecino, esta obligado legalmente a pagar multas por cultivo ilegal del transgénico. La prueba de que tiene maíz transgénico se hace por análisis genético. Esto obligaria indirectamente a que todos los cultivos se convirtieran a cultivos transgenicos.
